This year marks the second instalment of Gourmet Traveller WINE's New Zealand Winemaker of the Year with the judging panel chaired by New Zealand Editor Bob Campbell MW, alongside industry stalwarts Cameron Douglas MS and Raymond Chan. The New Zealand Winemaker of the Year for 2019 is Helen Masters of Ata Rangi, and deservedly so. Her infectious passion for pinot noir and dedication to expression of site has seen the winery become one of New Zealand's most iconic, with its reputation soaring across the globe. This years' Leadership Award goes to Rudi Bauer who has been a tireless promoter of the Central Otago region, while Ivan Sutherland of Dog Point Vineyard has been recognised for his viticultural skills – he was an early pioneer of the Marlborough wine region. A special, one-off Lifetime Achievement Award has been presented to Peter Cowley in recognition of his 34 years at Te Mata Estate – and a well-earned retirement.
