Oh Grenache: arguably the hottest red grape variety in Australia right now and for so long overlooked, grenache, with its vibrant red fruits, savoury spice and supple tannins, famously ‘delivers what pinot noir promises’. We’ve pulled together a dozen extraordinary examples of modern Australian grenache and blends for these dinners in SYDNEY and PERTH, showcasing a diverse range of styles and terroir, and ultimately, why this humble variety is so deserving of its newfound appreciation. 2020 Big Easy Radio Perpetual Holidaze Grenache, McLaren Vale

This grenache from winemaker Matt Head has a similar weightless flow across the palate to pinot noir, but with exotic spice, pure, ripe red berry fruits – and unadulterated smashability. Wine that is just meant to be delicious.

2019 Dandelion Vineyards Faraway Tree Grenache, McLaren Vale

Dandelion Vineyards’ Firehawk Farm is a single vineyard perched atop an ancient ridge overlooking the Willunga escarpment and the Gulf of St Vincent. This is a fresh, integrated and harmonious grenache, with green herbs and juicy berry fruits. Both long and flooding in flavour.

2019 Heirloom Alcala Grenache, Barossa

Raspberry and confectionery make up the primary aromas of this grenache, mixed with an off-sweet, savoury note. The palate is full of berries and French oak spice, leading to a cool, acid-lined finish.

2020 Hither & Yon Grenache Mataro, McLaren Vale

This svelte and tense grenache-based blend showcases aromas of blackcurrant, Amaro and English breakfast tea. The palate is succulent, with grippy tannins and fresh acidity framing flavours of raspberry chocolate bullets, garrigue and earth.

2021 Main & Cherry Grenache, McLaren Vale

This wild-fermented, basket-pressed grenache was made from fruit handpicked from old, dry-grown vineyards in the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs. Using 30% whole bunches and bottled without fining or filtration, it conveys a fresh, bright and pure style of McLaren Vale grenache.

2020 Oliver’s Taranga Grenache, McLaren Vale

Aromas of red berries, forest floor, earth and spice, with hints of nettle and ironstone lead to a super crunchy palate of redcurrant flavours, chalky tannins and mouth-watering, savoury acidity.

2021 Seppeltsfield Grenache, Barossa

Sourced from Seppeltsfield’s famous terraced vineyard, this joven-styled grenache is medium in body with a core of pure fruit The palate is deeply fruited with raspberry, cranberry and red cherry, and complex notes of dark chocolate and fine cocoa tannins.

2021 Swinney Grenache, Frankland River

Hand-picked, bush vine grenache with whole bunches (41%) and wild fermentation to build structure and texture. Bright, brambly and a deep
lively crimson, the palate is fresh and pithy with pomegranate, red cherry and suede-like tannins that frame the fruit beautifully.

2019 Tellurian GSM, Heathcote

A blend of 57% grenache, 38% shiraz and 5% mouvèdre, sourced from Tellurian’s certified organic vineyard, this medium-bodied wine balances the softness and elegance of grenache with the structure and savoury characters of shiraz and mouvèdre.

2020 Thistledown Charming Man Grenache, McLaren Vale

Three generations of the Smart family have devoted their lives to grenache; that this remarkable vineyard has sustained is down to one man, Bernard Smart. A deep, rich wine with muscular yet elegant black fruits, black cherry, spices and hints of violet and minerality.

2017 Domaine Tournon Landsborough Grenache, Pyrenees

Organically farmed, wild yeast fermented and aged in concrete tanks for 12 months, this grenache shows aromas of berries and spice, leading to a palate of bright summer fruit, white pepper and spice, and fine tannins.

2018 Varney Wines GSM, McLaren Vale

A blend of grenache sourced from bush vines in Blewitt Springs, Seaview and Whites Valley, shiraz sourced from a single vineyard in Clarendon and mourvèdre sourced from White’s Valley and Blewitt Springs. This is a gloriously modern example of the famed GSM blend.
