Taking the dusty drive up to this boutique cellar door between vines of verdelho and sangiovese can’t help but illicit just a nudge of the Mediterranean. You’re obviously in the sunshine state, but winemaker Simon Berry and his family are enthusiastic about creating a tranquil place to taste their work with a tangible touch of elegance and affability, which they pull off with little effort. The fully sustainable and solar-powered cellar door is part of the winery itself, and as attractive as it is functional, it exudes rustic charm minus the barnyard whiffs. Once standing at the bar and perhaps discussing the finer points of their ‘Super Tuscan’ blend, you can take in winemaking equipment and barrels galore. Or maybe you’d prefer to be given a tour of the facility while your lunch of pizza crisps, stone-baked to perfection — a touch of la dolce vita, South Burnett style.
