A region known less for its wine tourism than its bulk exports, the Riverina is undergoing a big transition with change at the forefront. Shifting their focus to cellar door offerings and tourism, the local wineries are crafting an impressive portfolio of experiences: from vineyard-side tastings, estate tours exploring the rich history of the region to exclusive masterclasses taking an in-depth look into the region’s hero varieties – there’s an experience for every traveller. A visit to Yarran Wines is everything and more you’d expect from a Star Cellar Door Award recipient. The setting will instantly relax you into wine country mode, with its surrounding vineyards complementing an array of cellar door experiences like guided tastings, locally sourced cheese platters and picnic boxes to enjoy on the estate lawns. Wine wise, expect premium examples of the region’s hero varieties like durif and botrytis semillon, but also keep an eye (or palate) out for winemaker Sam Brewer’s experimental wines like the A Few Words Pet Nat made from local Riverina montepulciano and the soon-to-be released Organic Riverina Shiraz – wines sending a nod to the new wave winemaking of the region.
