West of the Great Dividing Range in Victoria, two hours from Melbourne, are the rugged Pyrenees Ranges. Originally planted with vines during the gold rush in the 1840’s, it wasn’t until 1960s that the wine region of today was established. Centred around the small towns of Avoca and Moonambool, the wineries of the Pyrenees are known for ageworthy reds and sparkling wine. It’s an exciting time to visit the Pyrenees, with a growing trend toward sustainability, organic practices and ecotourism experiences. Head south and you will discover the Ballarat wine region. What sets Dogrock apart is the hands-on approach of owners Allen and Andrea Hart. Open by appointment only, the winery and cellar door are operated by this talented and passionate husband-and-wife team. Dogrock is a very personal experience. When Allen and Andrea open the doors to share their highly awarded handmade small-batch wines, they step out of the vineyard or winery. Nestled above the off-grid winery, the rustic cellar door has views of Mount Langi Ghiran and Mount Cole. The sustainably produced low-intervention wines here are served in beautiful glassware, and impress with their quality and intrigue. From the region’s renowned chardonnay, shiraz and cabernet to grenache and tempranillo. Be sure to ask Allen and Andrea about arinto and azal, the latest additions to their vineyard, and their first Blanc de Blancs release. Located between Avoca and Ararat on the western side of the Pyrenees mountain range, this experience leaves a small carbon footprint but a big impression.
