2017 Hill of Grace

It’s one of the most anticipated dates on the wine industry calendar each year. The 2017 vintage of Henschke’s single vineyard shiraz wines will be released on Wednesday, 4 May 2022.

Comprising the 56th release of Hill of Grace (A$900), as well as Hill of Roses (A$430), Mount Edelstone (A$235) and The Wheelwright (A$140), the 2017 is “graced by vitality”, as winemaker Stephen Henschke puts it.

“This vintage will be recognised for wines of incredible depth, purity and energy, akin to 1992, 2006 and 2012, all of which were late, cool seasons and have shown excellent ageing potential.”

Renee Burton’s Wild Ride

On your next trip to the Hunter Valley, there’s a new wine brand to sink your palate into with the launch of Wild Ren Wines. Wild Ren Wines is the project of Renee Burton (known as Ren). After spending 20 years experience in the industry – including as the co-founder and previous owner of Gundog Estate – Burton was inspired to start her own label. Joined by local winemaker Scotty Comyns (of Comyns & Co), she is specialising in local varieties like semillon, shiraz and chardonnay along with alternatives like grüner veltliner, vermentino and sangiovese. Burton has also opened a cellar door to showcase the Wild Ren portfolio in the heart of Peppers Creek Village. Down the track, Burton plans to use Wild Wren to push her passion for helping the next generation of women, by creating a program to assist young, female entrepreneurs.

Prime Time for Printhie

It’s here! Exciting times for New South Wales’ Orange, with the much-anticipated opening of the Printhie Wines Cellar Door and Dining. The Swift family has created an impressive cellar door, with everything from Printhie Wines and Swift Sparkling tasting experiences, a Printhie Picnic, a Swift Sparkling Masterclass and even a Helicopter Winery tour to see it all from the sky. Alongside the cellar door, Printhie Dining has also recently opened, with the menu by chef Jack Brown championing Australian native flavours and exquisite Orange produce.

Vale Karl Stockhausen 

The GT WINE Team was saddened to hear of the passing of Karl Stockhausen at age 92. After immigrating from Germany, Stockhausen first worked in Australia at Lindeman’s Ben Ean. But wine wasn’t Stockhausen’s original career path; his studies in accounting saw him take a role at the Lindeman’s office in Sydney in that field. But after the resignation of Lindeman’s Ben Ean’s winemaker Hans Mollenhauer, managing director Ray Kidd approached Stockhausen to take on the role.

Stockhausen spent a total of 35 years at Lindeman’s Ben Ean across accounting and winemaking, and helped craft notable wines including the Bin 3100 Hunter River Burgundy and 170 Bin 3875 Hunter River Chablis Semillon.

More recently, Stockhausen was known for his work at wine shows, being a Wine Selectors tasting panel member, a consultant with Briar Ridge. He was named as a Hunter Valley Living Legend in 2007.

A Bonnie Hello

Rutherglen winery All Saints Estate have opened a new restaurant called Bonnie. Bonnie is housed at All Saint Estate’s old bottling building, and provides picturesque views of the estate vines and nearby lake.

Dynamic siblings Eliza, Nick and Angela Brown of All Saints Estate are behind Bonnie, with the name inspired by their family’s Scottish heritage and meaning ‘beautiful’ in the language.

Food-wise, expect authentic Italian fare, with a range of artisan, wood-fired pizzas, charcuterie and cheese platters featuring produce from the Rutherglen region. For wines, the All Saints Estate portfolio will be on pour, alongside wines from St Leonards Vineyard, which the siblings also run.

Deutz Is Back

It’s been three (really) long years since acclaimed Champagne house Deutz was last active in the Australian market. Thanks to Griffith’s Calabria family, that’s changing. Calabria’s Vintners & Co Merchants is facilitating the return of Deutz, importing the NV Brut Classic (A$90 and A$45/375ml) and NV Rosé (A$90), two cuvées that beautifully represent the house’s affinity for elegant, complex Champagne. Both are equally great on their own, but we’d recommend pairing with food to amplify their finesse.

Rockley Returns

Matt Moran is reopening the doors to The Rockley Pub in the town of Rockley, south of Bathurst in New South Wales. Moran purchased the property in mid-2021, which features a 90-seat restaurant and bar, beer garden and accommodation. The pub is located just down the road from his family farm, which supplies a bunch of produce across the menu. Moran’s offering will feature pub classics championing local meats and seafood. Expect dishes like crispy Hawkesbury calamari, a ploughman’s plate with Moran family farm salami, Green Hill Farm spicy pork sausage rolls, and meats from nearby Cowra. Stay tuned, Moran plans to extend The Rockley Pub repertoire to include a bakery, general store and more accommodation.

Otherness Wine Bar

Angaston, in the heart of the iconic Barossa Valley, has welcomed a new spot for a tipple with the opening of the Otherness Wine Bar. Launched last year by Grant Dickson, Otherness features a portfolio of wines crafted in collaboration between Dickson and South Australian winemakers like Marco Cirillo and John Hughes.

Along with a home for their brand, Otherness Wines offers coffee and baked goods in the morning, followed by wine tastings, riesling masterclasses and dining by local chef Sam Smith (ex-Fino). If you also find yourself visiting from Thursday to Saturday, the bar stays open to offer dinner service as well, making for a perfect Barossan evening.

Rejects Get a Release

It seems a shame to let a near-perfectly good beer recipe go to waste, which is why Matilda Bay founder Phil Sexton recently decided to launch the limited Matilda Bay Rejected Ales collection. There are 27 different brews in the series, and with names like ‘Keep Dreaming’ and ‘Yeah...nah’, each tells a liquid story of the evolution towards Matilda Bay’s flagship Original Ale.

Surry Hills’ The Wild Rover is back, with a new name – The Rover – for all your post-work drinks and cocktail-filled evenings. Now don’t worry, you’ll still find that much loved rustic, cosy vibes the venue is known for, but now you’ll also be treated to a brand new food and wine offering by new owners Liquid & Larder (Bistecca, The Gidley). Food wise, chef Pip Pratt is serving up a seafood-focused menu with freshly-shucked oysters, octopus, sardines and more. While for drinks, sommelier Kyle Poole was given the brief to create a wine list that he’d like to drink, so as you can imagine it’s a goodie. Taking a focus on organic and biodynamic producers, the wine list features an array of light, bright and food-friendly wines that make the perfect pairings to Pratt’s dishes. Before leaving though, be sure to ask one of the team for the ‘French on French’ shot – you won’t be disappointed!

Over in Darlinghurst, there’s a new go-to for authentic Italian fare with the opening of Fermento. It’s everything you know and love about Italian cuisine, with owners Diego Mazza (ex-Merivale) and Giorgio Colosimo crafting an authentic offering with fresh pizzas, antipasto boards, pasta and more. Some of the highlights include the prawn ravioli; burrata with roasted zucchini and nduja and of course the pizzas, with the dough made in house. For wine, Colosimo has put together some great, food-friendly Italian drops designed to pair with the sharing style menu. If you happen to be visiting on a Monday or Thursday evening, you’ll also be treated to live music.

Pinot Gris Vodka?

There’s a new Australian vodka to add to your home collection, with the launch of Mother of Pearl Vodka. Unlike most vodkas that are crafted from grain, potatoes or corn, Mother of Pearl is made from late-harvested pinot gris grapes from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula and South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

Mother of Pearl has teamed up with the award-winning Melbourne Distilling Co to produce the spirit, which is an extremely approachable, smooth style of vodka perfect for any cocktail base.

Coast Is Clear For New Whisky

The Bourbon Cask Whisky (A$150, 500ml) is the latest addition to the Coastal Stone Whisky range by Sydney’s Manly Spirits Co. The second product in their Element Series, the whisky has spent time maturing in ex-Kentucky Bourbon casks to produce aromas of vanilla, and notes of baked pear and a long, slightly nutty finish.

The Bourbon Cask follows the release of the Sherry Cask last year, with another three products (Pinot, Port and Shiraz) to join the Element Series in the coming year.
