Husband and wife team Pieter and Michelle Badenhorst left their South African homeland 10 years ago, after Pieter landed a job as a research scientist in Hamilton, western Victoria. Keen to live outside of town, they stumbled upon a property with a couple of acres of neglected pinot noir vines. After much work getting the vineyard up to scratch and studying winemaking online, Pieter and Michelle released their first vintage in 2013. Fast forward a few years, and after feeling burnt out from full-time work, they decided to focus completely on the farm. Having already been offering beer (due to campers always requesting it at the cellar door), they turned to gin during Covid, now making several different styles. With a botanical garden, accommodation, music events, and Chappie, possibly Australia’s only winery emu, Suffoir is an oasis of wine, spirits, music and culture that deserves to be known by many more people.
