Just a couple of hours south of Perth, Geographe is a region rich in pastoral charm, and filled with intimate and mostly family-run wineries nestled among rolling hills. Still a fledgling region when it comes to wine tourism, be sure to plan your trip in advance as many cellar doors are only open on weekends. More often than not you’ll be served by the winemaker. The quality is solid, and there are some fabulous small-batch wines coming out of the region – many only available from the winery directly. Alternative varieties abound such as fiano, tempranillo, grenache, mourvèdre, touriga nacional, tinta cão and barbera. Prices are reasonable, if not a bargain for the quality. Cassandra Charlick

With what has to be one of the most desirable cellar door views, Green Door offers a complete experience. Named after the centrepiece in the cellar door – an imported Moroccan green door – the Moorish theme continues throughout the winery, through to the casual grazing menu on offer and the Spanish varieties produced, including monastrell (mourvèdre), tempranillo and garnacha (grenache). Owners Ashley and Kath Keeffe purchased the vineyard in 2006 and all wines are made on site with the help of contract winemaker Vanessa Carson, who leans towards minimal intervention and careful use of amphorae. Keep an eye on the calendar for special events and regular live music in the warmer months. The only downside is that their small batch wines often sell out so quickly that you might not have the full range to try in a single visit.
