Editor’s Letter

A Time To Celebrate

How strange to think that it’s been two years since we last held our annual, night-of-nights Winemaker of the Year dinner in person – also the first time I had the pleasure of meeting Sarah Crowe, when she was a finalist in the 2019 Awards. Needless to say, I was thrilled to see our judging panel had again put Sarah’s name forward in 2021 and, while we had no choice but to award our winners via a virtual ceremony, it was humbling to come together to recognise each of the talented recipients and finalists. Read up on Sarah and our winners here.

I’m also delighted to announce the appointment of Jane Skilton MW as GT WINE’s New Zealand Editor. Jane takes over the Kiwi charter for Best Buys and Top New Releases from Bob Campbell MW, whose work over the past 20 years has shone a brilliant light on the best NZ wine.

Perth-based writer Julian Tompkin journeys through the Swan Valley, where a new wave of producers are making good use of the region’s old vines and rich winemaking history, while Mike Bennie puts forward a strong case for 21st century cask wine. On the tastings front, our panel looks at Tasmania’s diverse and exceptional styles of chardonnay, while the GT WINE team showcases their top 12 verdelhos. In both features, the concept of ‘minerality’ surfaced several times – a phenomenon Daniel Honan explores in fascinating, and entertaining depth.

Lastly, we were excited to speak with fun-loving celebrity chef Miguel Maestre about his upcoming book, Feast, inspired by his Spanish heritage and his time in Australia – you’ll find a worthy selection of some of the book’s top dishes, with wines matched by resident expert Peter Bourne.

As I write this, the spring sun is beaming with particular intensity. Here’s to warm, soul-reviving days ahead, hopefully shared with friends and family (and plenty of delicious food and wine). We all deserve it.
