Space in the cellar must be at a premium for Barolo lovers after the superb 2015 and 2016 vintages, both producing such excellent wines. Hopefully there’s still some room though, because the 2017s are shaping up as a very attractive vintage completing a trifecta.

Stylistically the 2017 Barolos sit somewhere between the ripe and flavour-soaked wines of 2015 and the precisely detailed examples from 2016. They’re concentrated and they pack plenty of tannins (it is Barolo after all), but that tannin has a degree of finesse. Acidity is bright and ensures these are not big wines but still powerful. They’re the bounty of another warm vintage, but one in which the best producers have honed their approach to deliver wines with real freshness. They will also comfortably improve in the cellar for 15 years in most cases, even more for some.
