Space in the cellar must be at a premium for Barolo lovers after the superb 2015 and 2016 vintages, both producing such excellent wines. Hopefully there’s still some room though, because the 2017s are shaping up as a very attractive vintage completing a trifecta.

Stylistically the 2017 Barolos sit somewhere between the ripe and flavour-soaked wines of 2015 and the precisely detailed examples from 2016. They’re concentrated and they pack plenty of tannins (it is Barolo after all), but that tannin has a degree of finesse. Acidity is bright and ensures these are not big wines but still powerful. They’re the bounty of another warm vintage, but one in which the best producers have honed their approach to deliver wines with real freshness. They will also comfortably improve in the cellar for 15 years in most cases, even more for some.

2017 Vietti Barolo Rocche di Castiglione, A$150
Complex, engaging fragrance with fine-ground spices dusted across all manner of red berries, red cherry, blueberry and blackcurrant as well as fresh-picked herbs and leather, dried wood, stones and pomegranate, orange peel and more. Such poise and detail, impressive layering and gentle spice and wood placed into fine red and dark cherry fruit. Elegant. Drink over the next decade and more. 98

2017 Vietti Barolo Brunate, A$450
Sweet spices and leather aromas, with a fresh cherry edge, earth and fresh leather. The palate has a rich core of ripe dark cherry fruit. The power and composure is really something, very long and layered. Oak is nicely bedded. Such an impressive, classically styled expression. Drink over the next decade or more. 96

2017 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito, A$450
This has a richness from the outset with intense fruit holding sway over savoury tar and fresh leather notes. The palate is so packed with flavour and has immense depth as well as a deep wall of tannin that is sweetly ripe and builds impressively into the long, fruit-soaked finish. Dark cherry to close. Really pure. Try from 2024. 96

My pick of Vajra’s 2017s, this is the most complex in terms of texture. The nose is spicy with a core of red cherry fruit sitting pure and fresh. The palate is layered, and builds spectacularly with punchy and rich tannins. Unwavering and detailed. Best from 2023. 97

This really delves into savoury territory with earth, dried forest wood, dry-aged beef, baking spices as well as blackcurrant and darker cherry in the mix, too. The palate is fresh and vibrant with red to dark cherry fruits dusted with cocoa powder. The tannins are long and crisp, and acidity adds a cherry pip freshness to the finish.
