Well-known wine judge and writer Mike Bennie has been named as chair of judges for the 2021 Australian Organic Wine Awards. The awards, presented by Gourmet Traveller WINE and Australian Organic, will be judged in September, with the winners featured in Gourmet Traveller WINE.
Bennie says he’s looking forward to gaining an insight into Australian organic wines.
“I’m excited to see how new and innovative wines, wine styles and varieties are working within the organic wine community,” Bennie says. “I’m looking forward to tasting all of the great organic wine from across Australia – and importantly, from people with a common goal to elevate the quality of fruit in vineyards.”
Certified organic winemakers can send in up to six entries for the awards, with certification able to be from any Australian certifier. The winning winemaker will receive the Cullen Wines Trophy for Wine of Show, a case of wine, a decanter, and promotion through Gourmet Traveller Wine.
Bennie, a long-time contributor to GT WINE, is also the co-founder and partner at P&V Wine + Liquor Merchants, a store and education space devoted to artisan fermented, brewed and distilled products.
Last year, Tasmania’s Stefano Lubiana Wines took out top spot with its 2018 Estate Chardonnay, while the runner-up prize was awarded to the Mornington Peninsula’s Foley’s Hangout for their 2019 Scotsworth Farm Pinot Noir.
Entries are now open for the 2021 awards and will close on 10 September 2021.
