Long White Cloud’s Silver Lining

If there’s anywhere I’ve been aching to get to during the pandemic, it is, without question, New Zealand. A favourite destination in any year (granted, I have a lot of family there), there’s something magical about old Aotearoa. While our fingers were crossed for a trip to Auckland for our NZ Winemaker of the Year celebrations, it wasn’t to be – but we made sure to toast the winners and finalists via the interweb, with the help of our friends at Vintec. Read up on our winners here.

If you do make it across the ditch this year, be sure to read up on Simone Madden-Grey’s itinerary for a few days in Hawke’s Bay where you’ll find not only excellent chardonnay, cabernet and syrah but a vibrant restaurant scene and distilleries, too. Closer to home, Marcus Best conveys the quiet confidence of the Canberra District while Cassandra Charlick makes her feature debut with a stellar 48-hour Launceston itinerary. 

Tastings-wise, we called in the tall, pointy bottles en masse to GT WINE HQ in late 2021: the expert panel judged the best of Eden Valley and Great Southern’s rieslings while the GT WINE team tasted through a cluster of grüner veltliners. Also in this issue, Amy Northcott talks to some of the producers carving out a name for themselves in their unique patch of the Adelaide Hills, Brendan Black tells the story of the Yarra Valley’s Caroline Mooney and Bird on a Wire wines and Tom Kline puts forward a case for Galician godello and mencía.

As always, there’s a lot of good wine to seek out: here’s hoping 2022 provides plenty of opportunities in which to enjoy it (may I suggest kicking off with the recipes from Barrio chef Jude Hughes – the grilled octopus with almond and olive cream is highly recommended).
