The inaugural Australian Star Wine List Awards were held on 8 November, showcasing and acknowledging the country’s top wine lists and the teams behind them. The internationally renowned awards have been running since 2017, across the UK, US and Europe, and here at GT WINE, we were proud to be part of the first Australian edition of the awards.

For the occasion, the GT WINE team, along with some of Sydney’s top sommeliers, came together to watch the livestream, hosted by Star Wine List Founder Krister Bengtsson, GT WINE’s Dom Sweeney and Judy Sarris, and Australian judges Andrea Pritzker MW and sommelier Jacqueline Turner. Venues from Sydney, Hobart, Canberra and Melbourne took out top spots in the seven categories, with their wins taking them through to the international final in 2022. The awards were judged by a star line-up of international sommeliers including: Pascaline Lepeltier, Paz Levinson, Marc Almert and Arvid Rosengren, and our two local judges.

The Grand Prix Award for the top Australian wine list went to the Mornington Peninsula’s Ten Minutes by Tractor, which also took out best By The Glass List. Other categories included: Best Austrian Wine List won by Victoria’s Laura; Best Sparkling List won by Tasmania’s Lucinda; Best Short List (under 200 wines) won by Victoria’s Embla; Best Medium-Sized List (200-600 wines) won by Sydney’s Monopole and the Special Jury Prize for a list with something special, which went to Canberra’s Bar Rochford.

When asked about winner Ten Minutes By Tractor’s list, judge Arvid Rosengren praised the passion showcased in the list, and the diversity in vintages by the glass. “Just a wonderful list, wide and deep without attempting to be an all-encompassing tome. It confidently goes deep into producers and regions they are passionate about, while eminently representing the home region,” Rosengren said. “As for by the glass, I particularly love the fact that we weren’t looking at a list of 2020/2021 vintages but rather wines with a respectable (and respectful to the wines) bit of maturity.”
