Yarra Valley

Less than an hour from Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is the oldest and best known wine region in Victoria, with a reputation for whimsical rolling hills, charming hospitality and excellent wine. The biggest challenge of planning a visit is narrowing down the choices. Cellar doors range from low-key affairs to architectural glamour, and are clustered together in a vibrant and diverse community.

Payten & Jones

Star Cellar Door

(03) 5962 1935

Yarra Valley locals Behn Payten and Troy Jones were already well immersed in the booze industry when they launched their own label in 2006. They enlisted Payten’s dad, renowned viticulturist Peter Payten, to seek out some great sites and Payten & Jones was born.

The wines are minimal intervention, unfiltered, unfined, some without sulphur, unashamedly edgy and raw. The vineyards are managed sustainably, and the wines are made to showcase the sites. Yarra Valley classics chardonnay, pinot noir and syrah are joined by sangiovese across three affordable ranges.

The cellar door doubles as a street art gallery and bar and is run by an engaging team with a knack for convincing visitors to kick back after a hard day of tasting. NICOLE BILSON
