Yarra Valley locals Behn Payten and Troy Jones were already well immersed in the booze industry when they launched their own label in 2006. They enlisted Payten’s dad, renowned viticulturist Peter Payten, to seek out some great sites and Payten & Jones was born.
The wines are minimal intervention, unfiltered, unfined, some without sulphur, unashamedly edgy and raw. The vineyards are managed sustainably, and the wines are made to showcase the sites. Yarra Valley classics chardonnay, pinot noir and syrah are joined by sangiovese across three affordable ranges.
The cellar door doubles as a street art gallery and bar and is run by an engaging team with a knack for convincing visitors to kick back after a hard day of tasting. NICOLE BILSON
