A less traversed wine region, the Riverina continues on the up as producers improve their wine and cellar door offerings. Rich Italian history and Mediterranean influence permeate the landscape, food and wine. Scratch below the surface and you’ll find some of the best botrytis dessert wines in the world, at a fraction of the cost of their French counterparts.

Star Cellar Door & Best Tasting Experience

Italy sits at the heart of the Riverina and it’s almost compulsory for anyone visiting Griffith to drop by Calabria wines for a tasting and Italian fare.

Just a stone’s throw from the town centre, the family run business celebrates 75 years in 2020, remaining one of the oldest wineries in the region.

With the ubiquitous Bill and Lena Calabria at the helm, supported by children Frank, Michael, Andrew and Elizabeth, and a top-notch winemaking team that includes ex-Penfolds and acclaimed winemaker Emma Norbiato, the legacy is in great hands.

Family and warmth sit at the heart of the experience. Book ahead to order cheese platters and gourmet grazing boxes to complement the vino.

Wines are fruit forward, muscular and powerful; check out the Private Bin range, which includes nero d’Avola and montepulciano. If there are any better value table wines in the country, I haven’t found them. JOSH MARTIN
