Nagambie Lakes/
Strathbogie Ranges

The iconic wines of Nagambie Lakes deserve a chapter in any international wine textbook, yet many Australians aren’t aware of it. This area specialises in Rhône varieties and has the oldest marsanne plantings in the world. Nearby Strathbogie Ranges has the kind of varied topography that allows cellar doors to offer a wide range of styles.

Sarah Gough fell in love with wine early. In an industry where many have a few false starts before finding their vocation, Gough began her degree at Roseworthy when she was 18. Box Grove Vineyard is the jewel in the crown of a diverse career that has taken her around the world.

There is bravery in her winemaking. She is unafraid to experiment with techniques and styles. This courage is underpinned by inimitable intelligence, a quiet resilience and thirst for knowledge.

The focus at Box Grove has long been Rhône varieties with the more recent addition of Italian grapes. Gough is passionate about the lesser-known roussanne, which she makes in still and sparkling styles, co-ferments with shiraz and anoints food with as verjuice.

A welcoming Osteria set among red gums completes the cellar door experience. Dishes are seasonal and pair perfectly with an extensive range of textural, food-friendly wines. NICOLE BILSON
