Macedon Ranges/

These two regions are some of the best kept secrets of the Victorian wine trail. Sunbury has been producing wine since the 1860s, making it one of the oldest regions in the state. At just 40 minutes north-west of Melbourne’s CBD, it is an easy day trip with a range of dining options to boot. Continue into the hills to the north and you will find yourself in the coolest wine region on the mainland.

When Nelly and Alan Cooper bought their property in the 1980s, they didn’t have a plan for the site. A love of wine prompted the establishment of vineyards and since that time the Cobaw Ridge style has evolved as they worked with, and learned from, the land.

The vineyards are now certified organic and biodynamic. Winemaking has evolved to become natural or minimal intervention, but they don’t call it that. With meticulous attention to detail the Coopers are behind the whole process, believing wholeheartedly that great wine is made in the vineyard.

The cellar door is all about showcasing their work. A recent revamp offers extensive views across their lush green vineyards, with the Macedon Ranges a romantic backdrop.

Service is relaxed and personal as you taste rich chardonnay, and reds from pinot noir, syrah and the northern Italian variety lagrein. NICOLE BILSON
