Kangaroo Island

Leaning against the rail on the back deck of the Dudley Wines cellar door, a glass of wine in your hand, it is hard not to get swept away with the vista that spreads out in front of you.

Perched on the edge of a cut in the hill that tumbles down to the ocean, you are presented with a jaw-dropping view of Cape Jervis and the South Australian mainland. It is one of the finest winery vistas in the land.

Jeff and Val Howard are pioneers of the Kangaroo Island wine industry and their beautiful property, just 12 kilometres from the Penneshaw ferry terminal, is a must. Originally a farm for merino sheep and cattle, today the Howard family produces a great range of wines off their Porky Flat, Hog Bay River and Sawyers vineyards.

There are a variety of tasting flights on offer and for those who can’t drag themselves away from that view, you’ll find a range of things to nibble on from the lunch menu, so you can settle in on the deck and soak it all in. DAVID BROOKES
