Star Cellar Door
Wine lovers in Brisbane don’t have to go far if they want to visit a winery. The City Winery is the first urban winery in the Queensland capital since 1860. Fruit is sourced from a wide range of regions around Australia.
There are daily winery tours, at 11am and 3pm, and the tasting involves their six favourite wines of the day. Private blending sessions are available.
Club members receive Gerler Wines (the name of the winery’s efforts – taken from Carl Gerler who had a five hectare vineyard next to the Brisbane River, more than a century ago). The restaurant has a focus on local produce, and operates its own butchery and bakery.
At the moment, winemaker Dave Cush (co-founder with Adam Penberthy) makes a range of varietal grenaches from different regions and blends it with mataro. He’s also making a wide array of emerging varieties, all within the proverbial stone’s throw of the CBD. KEN GARGETT
