Heathcote

Known for its ancient iron-rich Cambrian soils, Heathcote is famous for deep, rich, spicy shiraz with silky, ripe tannins. But the region is diversifying. Spanish and Italian varieties are flourishing in the warm, dry climate, and a diverse landscape with cooler mesoclimates allows for expressive white wines.

In a region awash with shiraz, the Chalmers family makes wine from a dress circle of exciting Italian varieties. They have been instrumental in promoting varieties suited to Australia’s changing climate through their nursery business, supplying vines to wineries throughout the country.

Vineyards are managed organically and careful site selection ensures exceptional fruit quality. Grapes are handpicked, wild fermented and made with minimal additions. The result is a range that exhibits incredible fruit purity and expression of site, while maintaining true varietal character.

The cellar door has recently moved to the newly renovated Heathcote Inn, which also offers excellent food and accommodation. NICOLE BILSON
