While much of western Victoria is dominated by the reputation of the Grampians, the lesser known region of Henty has plenty to offer the travelling wine lover. Covering the broad expanse of western Victoria south-west of the historic town of Dunkeld, the region’s cool climate was first identified as ideal for grape growing by Seppelt in 1964. Since then, the area has diversified its production to aromatic varieties, complementing the spice-laden shiraz so well known in the Grampians.

John and Catherine Thomson planted their vineyard in 1975 on a plot of land 90 minutes from Dunkeld that had been home to four generations of wool growers. Relative pioneers in the unexplored Henty wine region, the couple continued to run the farmstead and estate, full-time vineyard management, and winemaking was passed on to daughter Belinda in 2005. Their second daughter, Fiona, also works in the business.

Substantial plantings of riesling and cabernet sauvignon were established in 2000 and now represent some of the best examples of these varieties in the region.

While their cellar door is only open by appointment (it is, as Catherine describes, still a working farm), the family host tastings regularly, catered to suit individual preferences, in their cellar door, designed by Australian architect Dr Graeme Gunn. CHRISTINA KAIGG
