The wine offerings of Gippsland are as diverse as its terroir, a fact that visitors are thankfully coming to realise. Gippsland has more than 60 wineries, with a particular emphasis on chardonnay and pinot noir. Given its agricultural roots, it is also the ideal place to partake in gourmet produce at award-winning cellar doors and restaurants. Due to the devastating effects of recent bushfires, now would be a great time to support the region and its many fine producers.

Cannibal Creek

Star Cellar Door, Best Large Cellar Door & Best Food

(03) 5942 8380

Cannibal Creek’s cellar door is a classy, roomy and aesthetically pleasing building, and home to a commercial kitchen, restaurant and tasting room.

The menu changes often and features gourmet produce sourced mainly from local farmers, plus some international offerings. The food is nothing short of spectacular, such as the cheese platter with quince paste, charcuterie and crusty bread.

The mains include homemade gnocchi with creamy chardonnay and mushroom sauce, as well as one with fresh basil pesto. Top it off with a superb basil panna cotta (a great way to hide the greens) and the best lemon tart ever. All of Cannibal Creek’s wines are available at the restaurant, with a wide range to match with every dish. BRENDAN BLACK
