Home to Victoria’s first-ever commercial vineyard, Geelong was once the most important wine region in Australia. That all came to a halt when phylloxera came to town in the late 1800s, but a century later, a revived Geelong is now a thriving hub of cool-climate wine production, boasting 40 cellar doors all family owned and operated. One of the great things about exploring this region is the accessibility, with a number of high-quality producers less than 20 minutes from the city.

A short trip up the highway on the way to Ballarat, the Clyde Park cellar door offers an impressively cohesive experience, with a stylish industrial aesthetic only complemented by the classy pinot noir, chardonnay and shiraz.

You’ll want to visit on the weekend, where the barrels are taken out of the winery and tables put in their place. The big wood-fired oven is put to good use, pumping out delicious Peking duck pizzas to be enjoyed with a glass of Single Block Pinot Noir.

The view from cellar door is a point in itself, although the best views are famously found in the toilet (the best seat in the house) and there are even chickens to keep little people amused.

The only consideration is that it can be incredibly popular, especially on Sundays, which means you pizza-loving wine fans should book early. ANDREW GRAHAM
