Cowra remains an important wine region, initially driven by chardonnay when the variety was in its infancy, but has few wineries and cellar doors. Although the terroir of nearby Canowindra is quite different, the pseudo subregion’s wines share the same GI.

Rosnay Organic Farm & Vineyard

Star Cellar Door & best accommodation

Rosnay is part of the Rivers Road Organic Farms, a unique cooperative driven by the Statham family, with a commitment to organics and biodiversity.

Sheep graze in the vineyards and fertilise the olive grove that produces table olives, tapenade and extra virgin olive oil. Fresh and dried figs add another spoke to this holistic wheel, as does the farm-stay option.

Sam, a second-generation Statham, now makes the Rosnay wines on-site in his ‘back to the future’ straw-bale winery. He has a natural feel for winemaking and an instinctive eye for quality.

The Rosnay wines are adorned with artistic labels painted by Sam’s family, with the simple cellar door expanding organically to include an art gallery.

Call first to ensure Sam isn’t picking figs, strumming guitar or playing with his cow horns. PETER BOURNE
