Clare Valley

If you’re a riesling freak, the Clare Valley should be at the top of your list when discussing your next trip to wine country. While it’s well known that the Clare Valley excels at this particular variety, it has many more feathers in its cap. The Clare is built for leisurely wine touring, whether by car or on two wheels along the Clare Riesling trail. There are more than 35 cellar doors of various sizes dotted along the latter’s length, making for an ideal long-weekend getaway.

There is something about the drive into Skillogalee Wines along Hughes Park Road that gets me every time. I think it’s the sight of those contour-planted vineyards hugging the hillside next to the road that signal I’m getting close to my destination.

More often than not, that involves an extended lunch, sitting at my favourite table under the olive tree, and indulging in some of the best food and wine the Clare Valley has to offer.

The Spanish have a great word that doesn’t directly translate to English, but it sums up the experience at Skillogalee beautifully – sobremesa. It’s that time spent at the dining table after a meal. Time that is spent chatting with friends, relaxing and drinking great wine – fully sated and blissfully happy in both your company and surroundings.

Skillogalee is the perfect place for a lunch. Fantastic food, crisp, gorgeous Clare Valley riesling, the dappled light of the outdoor eating area, the sweet-scented air rolling off the vineyards. ‘Skilly’ has a range of accommodation options available, so you can settle into a long lunch without a care.
