Beechworth has personality with its wines, soil profile, altitude, people and even the local birds all contributing. Together these make the north-east Victorian town a bucket-list place to visit. An acclaimed region for chardonnay, many of the 35 wineries here are largely by appointment only.

Just the drive into Savaterre alone makes you feel like you’re going on an adventure. Their neighbour on the opposite side of the Beechworth-Wangaratta road happens to be Giaconda, which shows they share good company.

The Devonian granitic soil profile, which surrounds Savaterre, is a hallmark of the Beechworth area.

A tasting experience with Winemaker and Proprietor Keppell Smith is warm and focused, yet relaxed, as you absorb the sheer beauty of the varying elevations at the foothills of the Victorian Alps. You may be lucky enough to meet his family, whose culinary delights, complement the experience seamlessly.

Savaterre focuses on chardonnay, pinot noir and shiraz and will reach the quarter decade milestone next year. It is a time when the vines reach an age
that allows the identity of the vigneron to really shine through. STEPH EYLES
